How to enable Sites Developer Preview

(If there's a better place to post this question, please let me know. Thx.)

I'm trying to figure out how to enable my new Winter 09 Developer Edition Org for Sites Developer Preview. I'm following the directions in Tutorial #8, Create a Public Web Page Using Force.com Sites (http://www.adnsandbox.com/df08/workbook-sites.pdf):

Step 1: Enable your Developer Edition Organization for Sites Developer Preview

Force.com Sites is currently in developer preview. As such, functionality is subject to change.

To enable your Developer Edition organization for Sites Developer Preview:

1. Open a browser and navigate to http://developer.force.com/sitespreview.
2. Fill out the new member form or use the existing member shortcut.

In a few moments, Force.com Sites will be enabled for your Developer Edition organization.
You can verify that Force.com Sites has been enabled for your Developer Edition organization by clicking Setup➤Develop.
You should see the link for Sites.

When I go to http://developer.force.com/sitespreview, I get a page where I can register for the webinar using the existing member shortcut, which I've done. However, there's nothing that refers to enabling Sites for my Developer Edition org. I've waited at least 15 minutes since registering (more than the "few moments" that the tutorial says), and when I go to Setup / Develop, I don't see the link for Sites.

How do I enable Force.com Sites in my Developer Edition org?

Thanks,

Jeri

Thank you for notifying us with the issue.  We are working to get the form fixed in the next release.  Apparently, this issue affects a small number of people.

If you are having trouble feel free to email myself (ntran@salesforce.com) or Bulent and we'll manually set you up.

Did you attend Dreamforce?  You had to enable your developer org (or sign up a new one) at Dreamforce in order to have the developer preview turned on.

If you weren't at Dreamforce signing up for the webinar is the right thing to do.  At the webinar there will be details on how to enable it for your developer org.

I tried this too. I followed the link contained within the tutorial. I then signed in using the DFC member shortcut. All it does is register me for a webinar. I'm not sure you can enable the Sites developer preview unless you attended Dreamforce. Has anyone else been successful in enabling the preview?

I did register at DF08 and it is still not enabled in my dev org. I bet they will turn it on next week or wait until after the webinar to introduce developers to it.

I didnt attend the dreamforce. I tried to sign-up new developer  edition but I could not open "sites" menu on salesforce...
Do we have to wait till the webinar ...even for a month?

I attended Dreamforce but couldn't stick around for the Force.com Sites hackfest on Monday eve. I DID see Bulent (the Sites product manager) present at DF about Sites and I suspect that the 12/2 webinar will rehash much of that presentation - so I don't think the webinar should be a prerequisite for activating Sites in my developer account(s). After all, the stuff is so **bleep** easy to use, right?

It would be nice to have a yes or no answer to the question: "Do we have to wait until 12/2 for Sites activation on our developer accounts?"
If yes, then I'll anxoiusly await 12/2 and stop wasting everyones time, If no, then tell me what else I need to do to activate it.

I have several dev accounts. Two of which I registered recently because I thought I had somehow managed to screw up my webinar registration, or that maybe Sites would only be activated for new (post DF) developer account registrations. I've contacted support to no avail, and my internal contacts are sales types who have promised to forward the email to someone who can answer the question, but still... SILENCE.

Ironically, my most recent webinar registrations have said that the 12/2 webinar is "full" so they've added another on 12/3. I wonder how many people are creating new dev accounts and webinar reg's simply to active Sites?

Is there someone out there with a dev account actually using Sites? "Inquiring minds want to know!"

I answered this question above.  Yes, you have to wait until the webinar, at which point you will be given details on how to activate it for your org.

If you were at Dreamforce you were able to either sign up a new org with sites enabled, or use the member shortcut to enable it for your existing dev org, but that was only available to Dreamforce attendees who went to the dev zone any time during the conference to sign up.

Thanks for the prompt response, Jill!

You might suggest that they mention it somewhere along the general Force.com Sites and Webinar registration path, because it certainly isn't clear (especially for those of us that did attend Dreamforce but didn't understand that we had to register while physically there, to activate Sites) that we'd have to wait til 12/2.<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><meta name="ProgId" content="Word.Document"><meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 10"><meta name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 10">

Heck, If I had known, I'd have said, "hunny, i'm gonna miss dinner tonight" and would have stayed around for the Foo Fighters too!

Thanks though. I'll sleep better tonight now that the mystery is solved :)

Self service form is available now. You can enable sites for your Developer Edition orgs at: http://developer.force.com/iwantsites

I want to enable the sites on my development account, but I am having some difficulties. Could anyone please help me?

This is what I am doing:
1. I navigate to the http://developer.force.com/iwantsites URL.
2. I click on the "Member Shortcut" button.
3. After accepting to display nonsecure items, I get to a form (https://wiki.apexdevnet.com/events/sitespreviewsignup/signin.php) which requires me to enter my username and password information.
4. Immediately after entering the develper account information and submitting the form, I see a warning on the IE's status bar.

After this the page (https://wiki.apexdevnet.com/events/sitespreviewsignup/processsignin.php) hungs and I never hear back from the server.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi,

As you will probably understand, I am really excited about creating websites using force.com. Unfortunately, I have not been able to enable sites for me.

I tried creating a different Development Edition account using the form in http://developer.force.com/iwantsites, but that account did not get sites enabled either.

I decided to try troubleshooting the Javascript error and see if I could submit the form. I was successful fixing the HTML page and submitting it (I did not get the warning message), but the PHP page is still hanging.

I saved the page in my local hard drive, and looking at the HTML code I found out the problem: Below are the lines that are related to this problem (for simplicity I am omitting a whole bunch of code)

function validate(button) {
   button.disabled = false;
   button.value = 'Submitting';
}
<form ... onsubmit="return validate();">
<input type="image" name="Submit" src="..." border="0">

As you can see when the image gets clicked, the form is submitted, but before that the function validate() gets called without any parameters. This assigns NULL to the parameter "button". Down on line 111, the property "disabled" is called for NULL. This is causing the warning to appear and the form is not submitted.

To fix this code, I made these changes on the local copy of the page:

<head>
   <base href="https://wiki.apexdevnet.com/events/sitespreviewsignup/signin.php" />
<head>
<form onsubmit="return validate(document.getElementById('APerezButton'));">
<input type="image" name="Submit" ID="APerezButton" src="..." border="0">

 I submitted the form, and the warning was gone.

Bad news is that processSingin.php page is still hung. I do not have access to the server code, so there is not much I can fix.
I guess I do need help from someone at SalesForce.com to help me look into this problem. :smileywink:
Thanks

Seems like the form has some issues with some IE versions.
I you can't use FFox 3 or safari or IE7 then please email me (bcinarkaya@salesforce.com) your developer org user name and I'll enable Force.com Sites for your org.
andresperezandresperez
When I reported this issue, I was using IE7, so I decided to test with the other browsers and I installed them in a virtual machine.

The javascript error only apears in the IE7, but the PHP form hanging occurs in all three browsers as I had expected.

I am going to send you my personal account via email.

Thanks

I also came across this issue over the weekend when trying to enable sites for one of my DE orgs.  After logging in with my DFC credentials and pressing Submit, the page just hangs.

FYI, I tried this in FF3, IE6 and Chrome (so Safari, basically) all on a Windows box.
