Can I get access to multiple instances through a single account?

Hi everyone,

I am just getting set up and I have a question about my multiple identities in Salesforce:

1) I am the main administrator for my own non-profit's Salesforce instance
2) I am planning to get certified as an administrator so I want a place to play around with an Admin Playground (I found how to do that - just haven't done it yet until I figure out this ID question).
3) Later this year, I will be starting my own consulting business and will need access to many instances, either to help set them up or just make changes on their existing instance.

Right now my one account is linked to an email address for my own non-profit. I see several possible options:

1) Have just a single account - which would mean changing to an email that's not tied to my own non-profit.
2) Have two accounts - one for my own non-profit and one for all my consulting related work.
3) Have a unique account for each instance I work with.

When I search, I see posts like https://developer.salesforce.com/forums/?id=906F00000009AlvIAE which imply that my only option is actually number 3, because you need a unique account/user for each instance. Is that true? Any other suggestions for how to deal with these multiple identities?

Thank you!

Yes, user name should be uniques across the instances, but you can use same email address. Ideally your username should be postfixed with unique value, which can be used to identify your org.

Ex. Username@domain.com.mydevbox
Username@domain.com.NonProfit

Thanks for the response! I think part of what is confusing me is that there are 4 different web sites I am going to and "logging into Salesforce":
1) My current instance for my non-profit
2) Trailhead
3) The Power of Us Hub
4) This site for salesforce developers

They are all currently using my non-profit email address as the user name, which is what has seemed "wrong" to me, but maybe it doesn't matter. I think I'll keep my one current user both as my own non-profit admin and for my general salesforce identity on the various websites, and for my developer account. When I get to the point where I have clients who will have their own instances, I will create for myself unique user names for those specific instances. Does that make sense?
