what is work of force.com in salesforce

I am new in Salesforce world and I found that Salesforce is using force.com for development, My question is what are the features which are provided by this platform.

Force.com is the infrastructure of salesforce which is used in salesforce development.  Force.com development environments, letting you code, compile, test, package, and deploy.
