accessing contact info on Task/Event Relation objects.

I need to run a query of tasks and activities through the task relation and event relation objects,  I seem to be able to pull all fields related to the task via task and event.  I can also seem to pull some of the contact information using relation, however it does not seem to allow me to acces custom fields on the contact.  I need to use a custom field from the contact to filter the query , so I can only pull in activities with task Relations that are realted to contacts within a certain region, and often tasks can be related to multiple users in multiple regions.

I would try to create a custom report type for Tasks or Events as th eonly object selected.  Then in the Layout section, add fields via lookup and navigate through the Related To field to grab all fields form Lead and Contact objects to place into the layout in thier own new sections.  Then use that new report type for your report and you should be in business.
