Is Lightning a replacement for Visualforce?

Hi, Salesforce newbie here. I'm trying to understand how all this Salesforce stuff fits together. Is Visualforce the old front end platform? Has it been replaced by Lightning?

No doubt lightning is way better than visualforce page( reusable cmp, mobile responsive, mvcc pattern etc)
but We still need visualforce for designing email template at least.

Lightning is the new best way to make custom pages, but Visualforce isn't going away.
