What is the difference between upload and deployment related with change management?

Lets say I created a text field and added it to account layout and I created a outbound changeset and upload it to production and then validate it and deployed.

Can you explaine what is happening behind the upload and deploye.I whant to know at which time the field is in production , Is it upload time or production ?
