What is the best Practices in Asset management?

We sell hardware products and becomes Asset for our customer. In some scenarios, we replace their assets for different reasons. In those situations, I would still like to see the related records mapped with old assets as well.

But, I'm looking for Asset-replacement process(technically RMA process). Assets are unique by SerialNumber and we would like to know repalcement process with this. Also, the returned assets will be used as a refurbished products later. So, would like to know what the best way to handle this with your experience.
