Creation of customer portals in salesforce

Hello,

What is use of customer portals ?
How to create them ?
How can specific profile be given access to protals ?
how are specific record types and objects be given access to portal users ?

Portals were before Communities were released. Use a community instead for granting access to records to external users and allow self service support to customers. This document has all the answers:
