Unable to deploy field with VSCode "Metadata API request failed"

I have retrieved metadata from my Sandbox using the project manifest, but am unable to deploy any custom field changes. I receive the following error when running "Deploy source to org":
An error was encountered during conflict detection. MetadataTransferError: Metadata API request failed: Component conversion failed: Method not implemented

Deploys work without issue using the CLI directly.

+ 1 encountering the same issue. An individual field will deploy, but not an object or all the fields on an object. Individual workflow rules will not deploy.

Disable conflict detection during deploy in vscode.
1. Select File > Preferences > Settings (Windows or Linux) or Code > Preferences > Settings (macOS).
2. Deselect (uncheck) Detect Conflicts At Sync.

Now try deploying the changes. Hope it works.
