how to associate account to contact when a portal contact/user is created

We have a customer portal where users will self register, so i am confused on how to associate the account to the contact. So if at all a person Y from account X is registering through the portal i want to associate the Y contact to account X.

How do you understand person Y is associated with Account X? Do you have an option to choose Account during registration or any other business logic to establish the relationship between Y and X?

We just have the customers company email id while he/she is registering.
