Unique Login for customer

Hi guys, having an issue with people within our communities having a unique login. Right now the customers use an automated user generated login ID. We understand that Salesforce has this created for a specific reason. However do you have any recommendations for alternative ways for our members to log into the platform (for them to create thier own log in name) because it is causing us quite a lot of backlog.

Thanks, but not sure they really answer my question.
The question was about how to have Salesforce community usernames their email instead of hob47293@ etc that we have created in our platform...I know that this is done to ensure there are no errors as the usernames are unique across the whole of Salesforce worldwide. But is there ANY way we can get our users to access the membership platform we have with their own email addresses? I.e. name@gmail.com instead of the generated Salesforce one  hob47293@...
