How can I change the font color of embedded text in a vf page?

This seems so simple, but I can not get this to work. I have a table with the included line item in a table. I am trying to change the font color of the work "inpatient" to red. I thought the font color tag would work, but it's not. Any suggestions? I do not want to change the color of the entire line or of the output value, just the single word within the text? Thanks!

Priya, I did a TON of googling trying to figure this out and actually already read both of those posts. The first link isn't really applicable to my question, and I did mention in my question that the font color tag is not working for me, which is what is directed in the second link you sent. Do you happen to know specifically how to do this?
