Get Started with Native iOS Development - Trailhead - can't create app

I've run into this error after following the steps in this Trailhead Module:
Installing pod dependencies
Update all pods
Updating local specs repositories
[!] Failed to connect to GitHub to update the CocoaPods/Specs specs repo - Please check if you are offline, or that GitHub is down

As a result, I can't create the app and it won't compile in Xcode.
I'm running forceios version 7.0.0.

Anyone else see this?

strange...the which pod command brought me to a different parent directory, not /usr/local/bin/pod. I get an error when running pod -- update.
