Make a field read only with an s-control?

Is it possible to make a field read only with an s-control? like field_name__c.read-only = true or something along those lines?

I do not believe that you can change the properties of a field dynamically. 

What are you trying to accomplish by doing this?  Have looked at field level security?

I need to make a field read only for standard users if a checkbox is checked, if not, it should be fully editable by everyone
