Close Case upon Auto-Response in PE?

Is there any way to close cases upon an auto-response in a PE?  I was thinking that we could use workflow or triggers, but those aren’t available in PE.

No, I don't think there's any way to do it in PE.

Ok, thank you, good to know.  With EE/UE, would it be better to use:

1.  Case Auto-Response Rules and a Trigger?
2.  Case Auto-Response Rules and Workflow Rules?
3.  Just Workflow Rules?

I'd go with auto-response + a workflow rule, unless the auto-close criteria are so complex that you need to write a trigger for it.

Great, thank you!  Do you know if there's anything within the case to indicate that the autoresponse has been sent? 

Also, are the auto-response rules just applied to Web-2-Case and Email-2-Case, or also to Cases created via the API?

Also to cases created via the API, but only if you have the requisite Message Headers (look up Message Headers in the API docs for the complete list of them).
