Triggering workflow

Hi there,
 
Wonder if anyone has found a way to trigger a workflow or action without the record being updated in Salesforce. I'm trying to create a workflow that tracks an opportunity and creates a task every day to alert the owner of follow-ups that need to be done.
The opportunity record, in which case, may not have been updated by anyone.

You can create time based workflow actions that trigger a certain period of time after the criteria is met.

This may help you get where you need to go.

Thanks Barry, yes the trigger can work but it'll still be subjected to someone either creating or editing the record and also provided the criteria have not been met before.

Wonder if there's someway to create a timer or scheduler to trigger the rule?

There is an entry in the online Salesforce Help titled "How can Time-Dependent workflow send email notification continuously if the lead is not modified".

It involves using the LastModifiedDate to reset the workflow timer.
