Automating change import from Sandbox to Production

Is it possible to automate the process of importing config changes from Sandbox to Production? I believe a similar request was part of the next release for salesforce. Can you please give me an update on this?
Also i have looked into the Snapshot utility from Dreamfactory, is it possible to import the XML data based on snapshot comparison between sandbox and production into production? Has anyone done this sucessfully?

i don't know of any other way except to create an appexchange package on sandbox and then install it onto your production env.  I've done this once before.

no xml import of metadata, but it sounds like a great feature for ideas.salesforce.com

Thanks a lot Ross for replying, hoever i understand in using the packager method custom fields do not get propagated into production and you need to create all of them manualy? Is it so.
