Standard Buttons Overrides are not transfered using the Deploy to Server Option

Does anybody have any idea why the standard button overrides are not carried over when you use the Deploy to Server option in the FORCE IDE?

I know button overrides are not packageable (vote for the idea), so I believe this also relates with the Metadata API. You would need to manually make that changes in the destination org.

Anyone know if button overrides are deployable in newer versions? 

 

This thread is from 2009 but I haven't found a newer thread.
