Change LookUp to Dropdown list using Page layout editor

Using the default sObject page layout editor is there anyway to change  a Relationship field to be displayed as a  select box instead of a Lookup field with the search icon that opens a popup,

You can change a lookup to picklist/ dropdown only if you change the datatype of that field.You  cannot display a field of type lookup as dropdown via standard pagelayout.

Such a type of implementation can be done via Visual Force page via custom code.
