How to make a field read only ?

hi,

I am trying to make a field as read only (Free Form Text and Picklist). But in edit mode of the record it is still editable ? I have tried in both page layout and Set field level security. But no use. I have tried this previously it was working fine. But now it is not working. So can any one help me on this?

It's probably a permission. Read this thread and see if it's enabled in your profile.
