Is there a way to highlight a case on the tab menu to indicate age or length of time before closing.

You can't change colors or anything like that, but you could create a formula image field to display a color flag or something similar to get the users a clue to the case age (> 10 days red flag, < 10 days green flag, etc.). You could also put the Case age or a case aging formula field in the list.

Just open the Help & Training window inside Salesforce and enter "image formula fields" as the search criteria. There are quite a few help topics and solutions to get you started.
