Assigning a task to many leads?

How is this possible? the task would be something like "call to inform about warranty offer" etc.

that gives me an idea for an S-Control,

you could do this, but it would be many tasks to many people, one identical task to each, is that correct?

you could write some code, AJAX would work
or you could use the excel connector to insert a copy of the task, one for each user.

using built-in features i don't see how without lots of clicks.

I just want to do this in the salesforce system. Not necessarily through the API. Where can I direct questions for those on the 30 day trail of the professional edition?

you can contact support they will direct your call.

you could in PE, build a Custom Link which created a task to meet your needs, then place this on the contact page, and click it once for each person that you create a task for.

workflow can also create tasks.
