Feel free to contact me directly.  I've implemented a number of joomla sites of varying complexity and written a (admittedly  trivial) authenticator to authenticate joomla logins against Salesforce users.  You might also look at picnet.net where I think Ryan Osmick (spelling?) and his team have written some more extensive connectivity stuff already.
