When did the v17 API come out?

 

More generally, is there a 'release log' page somewhere that lists when various changes to Salesforce have been made, and what they were?

It came out with the Winter '10 release.  With every release there is a new version of the API released.

 

Look up "Release Notes" in Help & Training for a log of what's new in each release.

Thanks. But what date did the Winter 10 release go live?

It rolled to Sandboxes in September 2009 and to production in October.  If you're an admin you would have gotten emails about it over a month in advance, and anyone logging into Salesforce.com in the days prior to that time would have seen a post-login message noting the maintenance window.

Which tool should be used to connect to v17 of the API? 

 

sForce Explorer doesn't seem to support it (initial Descrbe call fails) and the latest release of the Eclipse toolkit is for v16.

 

Any suggestions of tools currently being used to work with the new version would be appreciated.
