Non salesforce users

Is there any convention to save non salesforce users records or data when they are accessing a application through sites.

When a non-sf user logs in whether he has to be routed as a sf user like guest user. i.e whether his user details has to be appended(embedded) with standard sf user details.

 

Or let me know what are the steps to be followed when i want to allow non-sf users to login my app
