Custom lookup fields in standard objects visible in the API?

Are custom lookup fields in standard objects visible in the AP? 

Here's my situation:  I've created a lookup relationship within my account object, that has a relationship with a custom object.  We did this to provide a way to manage picklist centrally - this was a new feature in the Winter '06 release.

Here's my problem:  I've created a number of lookup fields in custom objects in the past, and I'm used being able to populate and update those fields through the API.  But, with these new lookup fields in the account object, I can't find any reference to the field at all in the API.  Are they visible?  If so, where are they stored?

They're visible in the v7.0 API, but not in earlier versions.
