Mysterious duplicate username when trying to add a new user

I have been trying to add another new user to my developer org and I get the error message that the username already exists. However, when I list all the users there is no user listed with this username.

 

What is happening here? I'm confused!

usernames have to be unique across all salesforce users, not just users in your organization.

I've been trying out dreamfactory's SnapShot application to move workflows from one org to another. The 'push' has been complaining that the required username is not in the destination org.

 

Hmmm...
