Strange error when creating a Site - <unknown> duplicate values

We cannot create sites as we get the following error:

 

duplicate value found: <unknown> duplicates value on record with id: <unknown>

 

which is totally unhelpful.

 

Anyone seen this error before?  i did see someone mention exactly this error (identical wording) in a post on Apex test clases but that does not seem related.

Thanks for taking an interest and here is more explanation as requested:

 

I click the "New" button on the Develop->Sites page.

I compete the blank Site Edit page and clisk Save

This gives the error about <unknown> duplicate values

Try changing the Site Contact, if it still won't work then I suggest you to log a case for it.

I have tried different values for all the fields including the User, page names, pages, active/inactive.

 

I get this error in all cases.

 

PS: I have logged this with support, but anyone who can help is still welcome to.

Hi.

 

In my case, it turned out there was a custom user field set to "unique", after unchecking this field property I could create the site.
