Trying to run a report that captures pipeline total for a historical date.

I'm going in circles here...trying to run a report that captures opportunity pipeline total for a past date. So basically, I'd like to find our pipeline total as of 1/1/2009, then our pipeline total as of 6/1/2009, and so on. Is there a way to do this and I'm completely missing it?
