I may be able to assist if you can clarify a few points.  What information are you looking to track? 

Do you just want to track changes to existing records?  (Then turn on record logging / auditing.) 

Are you wanting to add additional student data to an existing system?  Or, are you looking for a separate application to track students?  -- if so, how involved?  Only Name, address, e.g. contact information, or more elaborate, e.g. classes, teachers, schedules, periods, holidays, grades, etc, etc.
