define columns of related lists

i have 2 custom related lists in my package and when i user goes and installs my package the related lists installed do not come with any columns except for the default one. what im wondering is if it is possible to set the columns for a related list so that when someone installs my app the related list has the defined columns already set.

If you are installing the package for the first time then all setting related to related list,pagelayouts,profiles will be mapped. But if you are re-installing the package then new settings will not be moved and you need to do the changes manually.

this issue is happening on fresh installs.

This is strange.Then only thing I can suggest is make sure you add all pagelayouts those having that related list in your package.
