make SAML Federation Identifier also an external ID?

Hi, we have SAML SSO set up against our SAML/AD user store, and now want to create a scheduled process that adds/updates users from our AD directory into salesforce using batch files. We need a way to link SF users with our AD users, and seems the best candidate field is SAML Federation ID which we are already populating to make SSO work. However, we can't configure this built-in field to be external id enabled. Is there a work-around to this?

Hello Cal,

 

Can you help us understand why you need the Federation ID field to be an ExternalID? Are you using the dataloader to load records related to this user record?

That's exactly why I would the federationidentifier or employeenumber fields to behave as external ids, so when external systems are creating records to load into salesforce they can be connected to actual salesforce users using data external systems may have.
