Changing Account owner but not the open opportunites owner

Every time I change the account owner on an account, all of the owners on open opportunity change as well. How can I prevent this from happening? Help is appreciated!

If you're changing through the UI, I don't know of a way to keep the Opportunity owners as-is.  The workaround I discovered is for an Administrator to change the Account Owner via the API (data loader, etc.) and only the Account Owner will be changed, not any related records.

My problem would be that we have about 3 different user groups (20+ people) that are allowed to change ownership on accounts but are not allowed to upload.
