"Starts with vowel sound"?

Out of curiosity, when creating a new custom object there is a checkbox "Starts with vowel sound".  What is this used for?

I believe it is used in certain areas to know whether to use 'a' or 'an' before it.

Most (if not all) languages have "articles", which allows a noun to indicate the type of reference being used. For example, "the man" refers to a targetted individual that the listeners would presumably be able to identify, while "a man" refers to an unidentifiable individual. Articles change depending on certain grammar rules that vary between languages. In English, nouns starting with a vowel sound use "an", while all others use "a". In Spanish, the first letter does not determine the article, but rather the masculinity of the subject ("a man" is masculine, while "a woman" is feminine). If you change your organization's language settings to Spanish, you'll see the option change from "Starts with vowel sound" to "Sexo" (Sex or Gender, depending on who translates) with the options "Femenino" (Feminine) and "Masculino" (Masculine). As the system tells you, the terminology covers reports, page layouts, and tabs.
