Lead permission setup

hi All, We have a contractor who will work on managing some of our leads. We would like to limit their access to only Leads which we assigned to them as the owner. I already created a profile for this user with Read, Create and Edit on Leads object but it allows them to edit all of the Leads. I need to give them edit access since I want them to be able to convert leads. What is the best way to set this up? Thanks.

You have not checked properly. Edit button will show on every lead but it will not allow them to edit leads which are not owned by them. It will throw error -

 

Insufficient Privileges
You do not have the level of access necessary to perform the operation you requested. Please contact the owner of the record or your administrator if access is necessary.

One more thing - Go and check your organisation wide default sharing settings. Default access for leads should be Public Read Only. I think you have given default access as Public Read/Write/Transfer.
