Should I install Eclipse before force.com ide?

I installed the standalone Force.com IDE.  I have Java 6 update 33.  Force.com IDE installs and opens.  However, it does not have the options displayed on most of the screen shots I have seen of force.com.  There is no File > New option.  There is no Window > Open Perspective.  It appears that I do not have the complete force.com ide.

Do I have to install Eclipse first and the Force.com plugin instead?

You can either install Force.com IDE as a standalone application or add it as a plugin to existing eclipse.

When you install it as a Standalone application, the installers download Eclipse code as part of the installation and configures the Force.com IDE to launch as a standalong application.

You might want to check if you have the correct installer (32 bit /64 bit)
You may also want to check what version of JAVA JRE is installed on your system

If you are already an Eclipse User, that's when you install Force.com IDe as a plugin.

you may already have these link but just in case..

Hope this helps.

Thanks!  Which version of Java JRE do I need?  I have Java 6 update 33.  Is that correct?  Or do I need to install the JRE too?

Are you gettig any error? Doesn't seem like you'd have to install JRE.

when you click on File, do you only have the Exit option or do you have any other options?

There could be few reasons for your issue.

My answer would be Yes

Yes, you should install full Eclipse first so that you can use it for *everything* not just SF! :-)
