Splitting the Account Name field into First and Last name fields

Does anyone know if it is possible to split the Account name field into two fields.  One for first name and one for last name.  I need to find a way to assign oppourtunities to certain users based on the customers last name.  Any suggestions?

If your account name has some specific criteria then you can do it. Example: account name
Is in the format "account name " then you can split account as fist name and name as last name.
But you need to enable either person account or have to create two fields for storing fist name and last name.
