Trigger auto-response e-mail via API in 6.0?

I know the answer was 'no' in v5, but I can't find an answer (or any documentation) in v6.

Can you trigger the web-to-lead auto-response rules via the API in 6?

We're working on an email header that will allow triggering of emails in the API in a future release. Not the upcoming release, but likely the one after that.

Do you have an idea of when this behavior will be added to the API? I am looking for a date to tell the folks here at my company. We rely heavily on auto-response rules to let our customers know what is going on with their cases.
