What  is the diffarence between record type and report type?

I would say there is no similarity between these two, what made you to compare these two distint items?

Record Type - It is used to display differenct picklist values based on the users login.

                          different page layouts to different users based on their profiles

 

 

Report Type: It is used to fill the common/general fields from different objects and same report type will be used in several Reports.

for ex: Account, Contact

If we want to create a Report on Account and Contact object first create a Report Type with Account-> Contact relationship and use common fields from both objects and deploy the Report Type.
