can we prevent users from editing product through native salesforce pages ?

We have a custom page that allows to associate a product to an opportunity.

Is it possible to restrict user to edit product using standard pages?

I tried checking read only option from layout..but it does not allow me to check the readonly checkbox...it seems to be disabled.
