Invoking Lead Assignment Rule From Apex Code

Hello,
I was wondering if I can make explicit call to Lead Assignment Rule from Apex classes. Our client prefers to have it deployed using Apex class not S-control or any other hosted application.

There does not seem to be any way of calling or firing assignment rules from Apex code. I was told this indirectly by the Apex product manager. It is not on the roadmap either. It was suggested I use triggers to assign cases - I'm guessing the same holds true for Leads.
