Invoking Lead Assignment Rule From Apex Code

Hello,
I am working on a requirement where I need to call Lead Assignment Rule from a trigger. I was just wondering if anybody ever tried to invoke Lead Assignment rule from Apex Code.

The canned response is that you can only call a rule via the API, not Apex code itself.  I need to do the same thing with cases, so I'd love to do so.  Please reply if you find it actually is possible.
