Showing Child Object activity/activity history in activity history/open activity for parent

For the standard account object, if there is a child object defined, any activity/activity history for a child record shows up in the Account's activity/activity history.

I do not see this happen for a custom object parent and a custom object child...

Anyway to make it happen?

The reason why I need this functionality   is that a "light" user to be able to modify this information.

Salesforce currently only provides read only access to a light user to the Account/Contact object.

So I am in the process of creating custom Account/Contact objects - I hate to do this, but I don't see a workaround.

I might use a trigger to copy the custom contact to SFDC contact, so that some of the contact functionality is available to full users
of the system.
