Need to figure out the first owner of a lead

We all know that a lead can change hand, in its lifespan before convertion.
 
i need to know the first owner , in a specific time frame .
 
there's not a easy solution that SFDC has .....
******
any suggestion
 
ps: lead history report does not help , it gives me the whole story on a lead ...need to be able to extract the oldest line on a lead

Obviously determining this for past Leads probably isn't possible, but if you have Enterprise Edition or higher, you could create a custom field called "Original Owner" and a workflow rule that only fires if Original Owner is null and sets the current Owner to be the Original Owner.
