I would like to know if there is a way to replicate this same action using attachments or notes in a Custom Object. Currently the custom object has a lookup relationship to the Account record.
To use roll-up summary fields, the referenced object must be in a Master-Detail relationship. This changes a number of things about how objects behave, so make sure that's what you want.
To make the change, though, is simple. Go to your custom object field that looks up to Account, and change the Relationship from Lookup to Master-Detail. You should then be able to build roll-up summaries on Account that include custom object information.
