apex/SOQL generated report

Being that cross object reporting in the standard reporting mechanism is, well, pathetic. Is there any way to create a report driven by SOQL queries that can be viewed and stored like regular reports or are we talking visualforce with a custom controller?

The latter in our experience, unfortunately.

There are some ideas around this marked "under consideration", e.g.

I believe that something was shown at Dreamforce '10, but I've only got that information second hand from a customer who was in a number of break out sessions.

What's scary is that idea was posted by the manager for the reporting group FOUR years ago and it's still under consideration. It should have been DONE 3.5 yrs ago. SFDC has a lot of great stuff and I enjoy using it for the most part, but it has some gaping holes in basic functionality, especially in the area of reporting. Hopefully Summer 11 will see a big change in that.
