Is there a way to do a test deployment?

Im looking to be able to deploy changes from a sandbox to a live instance.  Is there a way I can test this process out before trying it on the live server?

Send the package to the production org, then do validate...

For instance... does this mean I need to "package" my changes?

Yes. Package your changes, send the to prod org.

 

in prod org, when the changeset arrives, you will see a button to validate the changeset. It will tell you if the changeset will deploy or not.
