Custom Components in Object Layout...

I cannot seem to add custom components in an object layout. Is this s restriction ?

Yes, you must add pages, not components.

also, the page must have a standard controller for the object that you will place it on.

Is this still a restricion? If so, why can't we use components?

Is there a way to go around this restriction?
