Show Recent Iem list from standard Homepage on visualforce page

How can I show "Recent Items " list on standard homepage to my custom visualforce page? Is there any way to do this using standard controllers?

There's been a few threads around this in the past and the short answer is no.  The recent items functionality doesn't appear to be available via Apex/VF.  

 

Its a real shame as its stopped custom home tabs for us a number of times.
