Create Customer Portal in Sites

I want to re-create the Customer Portal in force sites.

 

Has any body done this before and if not can you point me in the right direction?

what do you mean?

do you mean you want to authenticate the anonymous site visitors via customer portal?

if yes, then here is the article that explains how to do that. 

 

if you mean you want to create your custom authentication etc. then that's not the way we advise. Portal provides separate users, profiles, sharing, personalization capabilities which you can't get with your public site
